The Sub-Zero closed system, and what is actually inside it
Sub-Zero defines the sealed system in its own warranty as the compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and all connecting tubing. That is the closed circuit the refrigerant travels, and nothing else is part of it. The fan motors, the sensors, the defrost heater and the control board all serve that circuit without belonging to it, which matters enormously, because a fault in one of those is an ordinary repair and a fault in the circuit is not.

The phrase gets used loosely, usually by someone quoting for a replacement cabinet. It is worth being exact, because Sub-Zero itself is. The five year and twelve year sealed system warranties name the covered parts outright: compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier, and all connecting tubing. Those five things are the sealed system. If a technician tells you the sealed system has gone, they are telling you one of those five has failed or the circuit joining them is leaking.
What that list excludes is the more useful half. The condenser fan motor and the evaporator fan motor are not in it. Neither is the defrost heater, the thermistor, or the control board. Those parts produce symptoms that look identical to sealed system failure from the outside, a cabinet that will not hold temperature while the compressor runs and runs, and they are a different order of repair entirely.
So the first job on any visit is not to fix anything. It is to establish which side of that line the fault is on, because the answer changes the cost by an order of magnitude and sometimes changes whether the repair is worth doing at all.
Sub-Zero sealed system not working: what you would actually see
A sealed system fault rarely announces itself. The cabinet does not stop. It runs continuously and gets steadily less cold, which is why people live with it for weeks and then describe it as sudden.
- The compartment slowly drifts warm over days while the compressor runs almost without pause.
- The freezer holds better than the fresh food side, or the reverse, because dual refrigeration gives each compartment its own circuit and they fail independently.
- EC40 or EC50 appears on the display. Sub-Zero lists a sealed system issue among the causes of both, alongside far more likely ones.
- Ice cream softens and stays soft, which is the freezer telling you it is a few degrees down long before a thermometer is fetched.
- The cabinet recovers for a day after the condenser is cleaned, then drifts warm again.
Sub-Zero sealed system replacement, and why it is rarely the first answer
Before anyone opens a sealed circuit, the cheap causes have to be eliminated, and they are eliminated in a fixed order because each one is capable of producing the same picture.
Sub-Zero publishes one threshold that does most of this work. If the refrigerator is above 48 F with a 38 F setpoint, or the freezer above 10 F with a 0 F setpoint, it is unlikely to recover from a condenser cleaning alone and needs certified service. Below those figures, cleaning the condenser is the correct first move and frequently the only one required. That single number separates a maintenance job from a diagnosis, and it is free to check with a thermometer before anyone visits.

Continuous running with poor cooling is the shared symptom of a blocked condenser, a stopped fan, a failed sensor and a low charge. The order of elimination runs from cheapest to most expensive, and a technician who reaches for the sealed system first has skipped four things that cost a fraction as much.

It is a pressure and temperature diagnosis, not a meter reading. The technician reads what the circuit is doing under load and compares it against what the model should be doing, then looks for the leak if the charge is down. There is no single part number for a sealed system, because it is a circuit rather than an assembly: each component is ordered individually against your model. The serial tag carries the model number, serial number, manufacture date and the refrigerant specification, which together are what a parts distributor actually needs. Sub-Zero is explicit that parts from one model are not compatible with another, and that third-party components void the warranty.

It does not wear out on a schedule the way a filter does. How to replace a Sub-Zero sealed system
Not a homeowner job, and not a general handyman job either. Opening a sealed circuit means recovering the refrigerant legally, which requires EPA Section 608 certification, then brazing, evacuating to a deep vacuum and recharging by weight. Every one of those steps has to be right or the repair fails within months. It is also the point at which a sealed system repair stops being a component swap and starts being a judgement about whether the cabinet is worth it.

A joiner who ran a decorative panel across the vented toe kick has, without meaning to, put the most expensive component in the cabinet under permanent load.

Check the warranty before the price, because this is the one repair on a Sub-Zero where the manufacturer may still be paying. Sealed system components carry a full five year parts-and-labour warranty from original installation, then a limited twelve year warranty covering those same parts, with the owner paying labour and other costs.
