Sub-Zero evaporator replacement, and the far commoner alternative

The evaporator is the coil inside the cabinet that absorbs heat from the compartment, and it is the fourth component named in Sub-Zero’s sealed system warranty. It sits behind the interior rear panel, out of sight, which is why its two most common conditions get confused: an evaporator buried in ice is a defrost or airflow problem and needs no refrigerant work, while an evaporator that is leaking is sealed system work of the most serious kind.

Sub-Zero evaporator frozen over

Light frost on an evaporator is normal and unavoidable: it is a very cold surface with moist air moving across it. A solid block of ice encasing the coil is not, and it produces a specific and confusing symptom, which is a cabinet that is running hard and getting warmer.

Once the coil is iced over, the evaporator fan motor cannot pull air through it. The refrigeration circuit is working perfectly and the cold has nowhere to go. Nothing here is a sealed system fault, and nothing here needs the circuit opened. The cause is upstream: a defrost circuit that has stopped clearing the coil, a door seal admitting humid air continuously, or a blocked drain refreezing meltwater where it sits.

This is the serious one, and the word leak is doing two different jobs depending on who is saying it. Water appearing under the cabinet is a drain, and it is not this page. A refrigerant leak in the evaporator coil is a sealed system failure, and it is worth booking a diagnosis rather than waiting to see whether it settles.

Refrigerant is not consumed in normal operation, so a circuit that is low has a hole in it somewhere. When that hole is in the evaporator, the repair is at the difficult end of the range: the coil is inside the cabinet, behind the interior panel, often in foamed insulation, so access is a large part of the job. This is where the repair-or-replace judgement becomes a genuine question rather than a formality.

Sub-Zero evaporator not working: telling the two apart

The distinction is free to make and worth making before anyone quotes. Switch the compartment off and let it stand with the doors open and towels down. If a wall of ice melts off the coil and the cabinet then cools properly for a few days, the evaporator is healthy and the defrost side of the system is what failed. If it returns on the same schedule, that is confirmed rather than fixed, but you now know it is not a sealed system repair.

If there is no ice at all and the compartment still will not cool while the compressor runs continuously, the diagnosis moves to the sealed system and the charge.

Compartment slowly warming while the compressor runs almost continuously. Airflow from the vents weak or absent. A visible sheet of ice on the interior rear wall. Frost returning within days of being cleared. On dual refrigeration cabinets, one compartment affected while the other holds perfectly, because each has its own evaporator.

The panel comes off and the coil is inspected directly, which answers the ice question immediately. Beyond that it is pressures and temperatures across the circuit under load, and if the charge is down, a leak search. There is no meaningful way to test an evaporator without removing the interior panel.

This is the opposite end of the circuit from the compressor and condenser, which sit in the machine compartment behind the top grille. A dual refrigeration cabinet has one evaporator per compartment, so there are two to consider and they are independent.

Model-specific, from a Factory Certified Parts Distributor. Sub-Zero is explicit that parts from one model are not compatible with another and that third-party components void the warranty. The serial tag carries the model number, serial number, manufacture date and refrigerant specification, and on a Classic combination cabinet it is inside the refrigerator door near the top hinge.

Sub-Zero designs its products to last approximately 20 years and does not publish a component figure for the evaporator. Like the condenser it is a passive coil with nothing to wear out, so it fails from corrosion or a leak rather than age. Repeated deep icing is hard on it because ice expanding around a coil puts stress on joints that were never meant to carry it.

How to replace a Sub-Zero evaporator

Refrigerant recovered under EPA 608, the interior panel and often shelving and liner trim removed for access, the coil unbrazed and replaced along with a new drier, then a deep vacuum and a charge by weight. The access is what makes this the most labour-intensive sealed system repair on the cabinet, not the part itself.

Dual refrigeration means two separate circuits and one evaporator each, so the compartments never share air and fail independently. A perfect freezer proves nothing about the refrigerator side. It is also why a fault on one side alone is normal rather than baffling.

Meltwater from each defrost cycle leaves the evaporator area through a drain. If that drain blocks, the water refreezes at the base of the coil and builds upward, which is a coil buried in ice with a completely healthy refrigeration circuit behind it. Worth clearing before anyone reaches for the recovery machine.

How do I know if my Sub-Zero evaporator is bad?

Take the interior rear panel off and look, because the two possibilities look completely different. A coil buried in ice is a defrost, seal or drain problem and the evaporator itself is fine. A clean coil on a cabinet that still will not cool, with the compressor running continuously, points at the charge and a possible leak in the coil, which is genuine sealed system work.

How long does a Sub-Zero evaporator last?

Clearing ice off a frozen coil, on the other hand, is something you can safely do by switching the compartment off and letting it melt.

What we can say is that evaporator work sits at the expensive end of sealed system repair, because the access rather than the part drives the labour. It is also named in the five year full and twelve year limited sealed system warranty, so check the serial tag date first.
